Hiring your wedding photographer is an incredibly important decision when planning your wedding. Some couples will know EXACTLY who they want to choose. Others will have a harder time with the process. Ottawa is full of many incredibly talented photographers, which definitely doesn’t make that decision easier! Here are some tips to help you narrow down your search!
Your photographer, aside from your spouse, is going to be the person you will spend the most time with on your wedding day. You NEED to get along with them. Best case scenario, they feel like an old friend! Hiring a photographer with a personality you enjoy is so important. The day will be more enjoyable, and your pictures will reflect that you are having fun with them!
Do your research. Whether it be Instagram, Facebook, websites, etc. make sure the photographer you hire has a portfolio you love. What you see is typically what you get and remember that! Do you like the way your potential photographer poses their clients? Do you like the way their photos look edited? Can you picture yourself as the couple in their photos? If the answer to any of those questions is no, you may want to consider someone else.
When referring to style, I am referring to the way the photos are edited and delivered. Photographers are often referred to as “light and airy” or “dark and moody” and although there are a hundred styles in between, the bottom line is: don’t hire a light and airy photographer if you want dark and moody photos. Photographers spend many months and years establishing their style, and they won’t be able to change it for you very easily… even if you ask nicely!
What are you looking for in a wedding photography package? Are you hoping to include engagement photos? A second shooter? Are albums and prints important to you? Maybe you’d like the option to add video, rehearsal dinner coverage, a 1-year anniversary shoot, etc. Study your potential photographer’s packages and see which ones are the closest to fitting your needs.
And of course, everyone has a budget! When you are hiring your wedding photographer, ask your photographer about payment options, payment plans, etc. If they are slightly out of budget, see if they offer custom wedding packages that may be adjusted to fit your budget.
Don’t be afraid to shop around. Send emails and inquire with a few options once you’ve narrowed them down. However, please consider letting all photographers know when you have chosen someone else so they can free up the date in their calendar for other potential calendars!
